I am a big photography enthusiast and love to take pictures of just about everything. I also love to appreciate amateur and professional photography as it gives me new perspective and ways to improve my own work. I have listed 5 creative ways for photographers well known or unknown to take pictures with any camera. Enjoy!
1. Fill-in Flash
A nice burst of flash can really elevate a portrait by illuminating shadows and putting some light to the eyes of a subject if there is one.
It is important to remember that you can produce great results with a built-in flash on a compact camera. Most compact cameras have what is called “Forced flash”, “Flash-on” or “Fill-in Flash” settings that tell the camera to fire the flash regardless of other light available in the setting.
If you decide to use these settings it would be in your best interest to enable the anti-redeye feature as this will fire a pre-flash. This feature will cause your subjects pupil’s to close enough as to reduce the chance of redeye.
A small trick I learned a while ago was in part due to some pictures being too bright because of the flash. I discovered if you use a piece of tissue paper or something to that effect with similar color and texture, the extra and unwanted light from the flash will be diffused.
2. Limit Depth of Field
Cameras with large sensors are usually associated with limited depth of field, however it is possible to restrict the “sharp” zone in an image shot with a compact camera with a small sensor.
If you want to limit the depth of field with a compact camera, I would recommend extending the lens to its maximum point and move closer to your subject. Point-and-shoot compact cameras don’t offer too much control over aperture and shutter speed, so you won’t be able to select a wide aperture to reduce depth of field. You can set your camera to “Portrait” scene mode and it will select a larger aperture however.
3. Shoot From New Angles
Most photos are taken from “head height”, which is that general area of standing up and taking a picture from your face. If you change up your stance and where you take photos from, your work will be on its way to adding new perspective and visuals.
The process can be a lot easier for compact camera users as those cameras are much smaller than others. it is important for larger camera users to take their time with photos at different angles. It can be hard but its important to keep trying and not settle for one or two shots that are ok. Instead take 20 and pick the perfect shot. Also, it is important to remember to keep your eye on the horizon if you intend on having a balanced shot.
4. Blur Movement
People are quite often very obsessed with highlighting the whole image they shoot by making it extra sharp. This is a very traditional technique but sometimes adding in some blur can really help the shot and maybe make the focus of it look even sharper.
In order to properly blur movement you need a long shutter speed. You may be able to extend shutter speed more than the normal settings by using a neutral density filter in front of the camera’s lens because some compact cameras have a filter thread.
